Sergeants Mess

Our company is passionate about the history of the spaces we have so carefully selected for our venues. For this reason, we felt that retaining the Sergeants' Mess name was not only a great way to pay homage to the history of the building but also fitting for the venue's purpose. The Sergeants' Mess was a place where people gathered to drink, eat, and socialize, which is very much what the venue will continue to be used for, for years to come.

Sergeants' Mess is a Grand Pacific Group venue—a premium hospitality group offering experiences beyond comparison. Chowder Bay, named after whalers who made "chowder" from the bay's abundant seafood in the 1820s, is located on the southern side of Sydney's Middle Head peninsula. Nestled between a stunning harbor-side frontage and a steep backdrop of natural bushland, Chowder Bay was opened to the public in 2000 following decades of military occupation. The area features complex historic buildings and facilities established as a Submarine Miners Depot in 1892, later used as barracks and mess buildings for the Australian military.

The original Sergeants' Mess building was constructed in 1963 as part of the Georges Heights Australian Military Army Base. The Sergeants' Mess was the building where officers would congregate for meals and socializing. It included a pool room, a main dining room, living quarters downstairs, laundry facilities, and a kitchen.
